Grab your walking shoes and prepare for The Flying Fortress 5K, an event to benefit the restoration of the The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum’s B-17, the “City of Savannah”. While this event doesn’t officially happen until Saturday, November 17, 2012 you can take advantage of early bird registration from now until August 31.
“In 2009, The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum welcomed its very own World War II Flying Fortress B-17 Bomber. The plane was transported from a storage hanger at the National Air and Space Museum to its permanent home inside the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum’s Combat Gallery. The Museum named its B-17 bomber “City of Savannah” in honor of one which left Hunter Army Air Field in Savannah and flew bombing missions over Germany in World War II. The “City of Savannah” is in the process of being restored to its wartime configuration. The bomber will remain on display inside the Museum during this restoration process. Activated in 1942 in Savannah, GA the Eighth Air Force was an important strike element in World War II and remains an active force today. The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum honors the Mighty Eighth’s proud legacy by preserving the stories of courage, character and patriotism displayed by the men and women of the Eighth Air Force from World War II to the present.”
The Flying Fortress 5K event will make its way through the campus of JCB, Inc., starting and finishing at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, located at 175 Bourne Avenue in Pooler. In addition to the good cause you’ll be walking for, awards will be given for certain categories and age groups.
The Mighty Eighth Airforce Museum is one of the world’s most powerful museum experiences, preserving the stories of courage, character and patriotism displayed by the men and women of the Eighth Air Force from World War II to the present.
