Memorial Day Weekend Program
Fort McAllister State Historic Park will host a Memorial Day weekend program on Saturday, May 26 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The program will focus on the life of the common Confederate and Union soldiers. There will be musket and cannon demonstrations and special salutes fired in honor of war dead. This event is $6.50 for adults and $3.75 for children. Fort McAllister Park is located at GA Spur 144 and Fort McAllister Road. For more information, call 912-727-2339.
Early Bird’s Walking Tour of the City Isaiah Knew
See what survives of the 1820s Savannah that master builder Isaiah Davenport knew. Come to the Davenport House Museum at 7:30am to start your tour. You’ll walk by some of the finest examples of preservation in the city and learn about what no longer remains. Topics will include the Great Fire of 1820, the yellow fever epidemic of 1820, Lafayette’s visit to Savannah in 1825 and the celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of the United States in 1826. Coffee and treats will follow in the Davenport House garden. The tour lasts approximately 100 minutes and covers 2.7 miles. This event is only $20. Davenport House Museum is located at 324 E. State Street.
Memorial Day Weekend Paddle Trip
Now this sounds like a fun way to spend Memorial Day weekend! May 26-28, celebrate the beginning of summer with a paddle trip down the beautiful Savannah River. You will depart Saturday morning (May 26) at 8 a.m. from Burton’s Ferry Landing on Hwy 301 in Sylvania, GA and end Monday afternoon (May 28) at Ebenezer Landing in Rincon, GA. The days will be spent exploring primitive oxbows, searching for gators and birds, and learning about the history of the area. The nights will be spent camping along the banks of the river and enjoying storytelling around a campfire.
A motorized boat will be trailing the canoers and kayakers so you won’t even have to carry your gear! They will transport you and your boat back to the starting location upon the end of the trip. And, of course, they will feed you well! The cost is $225 per person or $600 for a family of 4 (children must be under 16 years of age).

“Remembering Our Heroes” Service and Picnic
On Sunday, May 27, at 10:30am, Coastal Cathedral will be holding a special Memorial Day service in the Sanctuary. It will feature a video, Color Guard from Hunter AAF, a wreath presentation, and patriotic music. After the service, the community is invited to an outdoor picnic. Free food and refreshments will be provided and Military vehicles from Hunter AAF will be on display. Coastal Cathedral is located at 275 Berwick Blvd. For more information, call 912-925-1415.
Memorial Day Candle Light Ceremony
Chapter 671 of the Vietnam Veterans of America is sponsoring the annual Memorial Candle light Ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial in Emmet Park. The service will begin at 6:30 p.m. with The Brass Quintet form the Infantry Division Band at Ft. Stewart. The special speaker will be Major General Jeffrey E. Phillips US Army assistant deputy chief of staff, G-1. There will also be a wreath laying, a rifle salute and taps played. This is a family event and open to the public but you are asked to bring a chair due to the limited seating. Emmet Park is located on East Bay Street.

Memorial Day Ceremony
The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville will host a Memorial Day ceremony on May 28 at 11:00am. The Glennville VFW/American Legion post will participate in the service, along with members of Ft. Stewart’s 3rd Infantry Division and a bugler from Bugles Across America. The Cemetery is located at 8819 US HWY 301. For more information, call 912-654-5398.
